Artist's Statement

Mikenna Bowers Art

I shoot with a Canon Mark 3 EOS 5D camera and a zoom lens. Depending on the type of shot, I sometimes write down my ideas and the meaning behind the image I want to create. I also try to draw thumbnails including the key light, fill light, and back light into my plan.  As I begin shooting I may decide to change small things or the overall idea. My images are usually portraiture involving me interacting and bonding with new people. I use many different mediums to create art, such as photography, painting, drawing, and experimenting with new tools and techniques.

The reason I make art is, I have a strong desire to share my work with others because art is how I communicate who I am. I used to dance to express myself and shared the outlet by teaching special needs kids how to dance. Due to my Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, Anemia, and several bones in each foot that are out of place, I had to stop dancing. I want to continue having a similar impact on people as well as including everyone into art. I am a #metoo survivor and want people to know they are not alone by making art about the struggle. The pain I have experienced in life will not be in vain; I will use my own experiences to bring people together.

My desired impact is to raise awareness on difficult topics that need to be changed for the betterment of society. In the words of Cesar Cruz, “Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable”. The purpose of my work is to make people feel as though they belong and they are not alone in life. With my work I want to become not only successful but significant as well.
